This was the case over the weekend when Penn Sports Interactive (PSI) noticed that prop bets were allowed about 90 minutes after the result of the prop in the New York Giants vs Arizona Cardinals game, which ended on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 17. Before switching to ESPN Bet later this fall, 10 market types with a total of 14 market names were open, according to PSI, which runs the Barstool Sportsbook. PSI notified and provided all necessary information about the incident to the Massachusetts Game Commission (MGC) on Monday, September 18, when it requested that all bets be nullified.
In a petition to MGC, PSI identified the main and secondary causes of the incident. According to the petition, “A major root cause of this issue has been identified as a technical data analysis issue at one of the Oz providers, Swish Analytics. The secondary cause was confirmed to have occurred when the sports trading platform ‘Vegas’ experienced a significant increase in activity shortly after the start of the afternoon game. This increase in activity has created latency on certain ‘Vegas’ monitoring displays. It was only after the latency issue was resolved that the PSI was able to identify betting anomalies on the event.”
The petition continued, “An emergency release was scheduled to be distributed in the week of September 18, 2023 regarding how PSI addresses and prevents, which will correct any Swish Analytics data parsing issues to handle all player prop market updates and values. PSI will also introduce system performance enhancements to address display monitoring latency.”
MGC has voted to invalidate the bet in connection with this incident after reviewing all the information at hand. The Pennsylvania Game Control Board is also nullifying its bets as a result of the incident at the same request from PSI, but the size or amount of the bet is not yet known.
