This frenzy has become an annual tradition at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino.
A week before the Super Bowl, a crack employee at the resort’s superbook officially announces a portfolio of some 400 highly anticipated proposal bets. Unnerved bettors are lining up for hours for the chance to place their first div bets on everything from Payton Manning’s total pass yards to whether Stephen Curry will score more points than the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Abroad, the laundry list of prop bets is more colorful and varied, with books like Bobada Sportsbook and BetOnline Sports increasing the odds on items like how long it takes to sing the national anthem, the color of Beyoncé’s shoes to wear for the halftime show, or the number of wings the Buffalo Wild Wings will sell on Super Bowl Sunday (more than 12 million).

However, the number of bets available began to increase in the early 1980s. Although common props, such as rushing yards and pass yards, began to surge, the explosion of prop popularity took place after the 1986 Super Bowl between the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots. It was the year when a small number of Las Vegas bookmakers tried to get creative.
“The desire for Super Bowl prop bets and overall sports betting was growing, so we wanted to give the public what they wanted, and that was more of a way to bet on the game,” explained dean Jimmy Vaccaro, a sports book director who was originally in MGM Grand Hotel & Casino Las Vegas, in “86. “So Art Manteris, who was in Caesars at the time, and Jerry Rudt, who ran the Barbary Coast, thought it was a good idea to provide props in the refrigerator that scored TDs at the game. We were looking to evoke some interest, and we definitely got it.”
