Korea women’s volleyball advances to quarterfinals after finishing second in group at Asian Championships
Korea Women’s Volleyball has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 22nd Asian Championship.
Korea, ranked 37th in the FIVB world, swept aside 79th-ranked Uzbekistan in straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-12) in the final match of Group C at the 2023 Asian Championships at Chachai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand on Monday.
South Korea, who lost to Vietnam and narrowly beat Chinese Taipei, qualified for the quarterfinals with a 2-1 record and 6 points, second behind Vietnam (8 points), who won all three matches.
Korea earned one point by losing to Vietnam with a set score of 2-3, and two points by beating Chinese Taipei 3-2. A set score of 3-0 or 3-1 would give them three points.
South Korea used strong targeted serves and center hitting to overcome Uzbekistan, who were several points below them, in one hour and 19 minutes.
Vietnam (No. 46), which upset South Korea two days earlier, also defeated Chinese Taipei (No. 48) in straight sets, 3-1, to claim the top spot in Pool C.
South Korea will play Thailand, the favorite to top Pool A, in the first match of the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the same venue.
Thailand and Australia from Pool A and the first- and second-place finishers from Pool C, Vietnam and Korea, will meet in the quarterfinals, with the first- and second-place finishers advancing to the semifinals.
In the other quarterfinal tournament between Group B’s first and second place finishers and Group D’s first and second place finishers, 먹튀검증 China and Japan will likely meet in the final four.
