MGM Osaka, Osaka Expo Outstanding Issues

The head of the international organization overseeing the 2025 Osaka Expo scheduled for next year on the island of Yumeishima has yet to address concerns about noise and other environmental impacts from nearby MGM Osaka Integrated Resort (IR) construction sites, Japanese media reported.

The same newspaper story on Sunday quoted an unnamed source from the casino project development team as saying the resort timetable had been public information for some time. The source added that a six-month suspension of construction for the 2025 expo could actually lead to longer delays as well as pushing back on the IR completion date target and adding to costs. The plan is now set to begin in 2030 and is already priced at 1.27 trillion yen (currently $8.82 billion).

The Sankei Shimbun reported on the 1st that Dimitri Kerkenchez, secretary-general of the International Exposition Organization (BIE), talked about the negative impact of the construction of MGM Osaka, a casino complex. The Expo 2025 event will be held in Tokyo, Japan, for 184 days from April 13 to October 13 next year (file photo).

“We were first told in June 2024 that the [MGM Osaka] IR works are scheduled to start in April 2025,” Mr Kerkentz was quoted as saying in a report on Sunday, according to information reviewed by GGRA’s Japan correspondent. 에볼루션 바카라사이트

Kerkentzes added: “The impacts include dust, noise, landscape disturbance and a tense logistics network.”

He also noted, “Since 2019, the BIE, the 2025 World Exposition Association and the Osaka government have discussed the mutual influence between the fair and IR.”

The BIE secretary general was also quoted as saying, “They promised us that they would fully understand our concerns and that IR construction would never have a negative impact on the Expo.”

“Again, it is essential that we coordinate effectively among ourselves so that IR construction does not negatively impact the smooth operation of the Expo,” Mr. Kerkentzes said.

In early August, the BIE was among several voices calling for a halt to construction work on the MGM Osaka project during the expo, several local Japanese media reported at the time.

MGM Osaka is a project between MGM Resorts International, Orix Inc. of Japan, and a number of local investors. The company developing the project is Osaka IRKK.

Shortly after the initial report, local TV news service Kansai TV cited an unnamed Osaka IRKKK source as saying the developer was “surprised” and “concerned” about the pause request, and also cited the possibility of a cost if there was a pause during Expo 2025.

The Sankei Shimbun’s Sunday report quoted Mr Kerkenchez as saying: “Since 2019, the BIE, the 2025 World Exposition Association and the Osaka government have been talking about the mutual influence between Expo and IR.”

The BIE secretary general added: “They promised us that they would fully understand our concerns and that IR construction would never have a negative impact on the Expo.”

“Again, it is essential that we coordinate effectively among ourselves so that IR construction does not negatively impact the smooth operation of the Expo,” Mr. Kerkentzes said.

During MGM Resorts’ second-quarter earnings call on July 31, Bill Hornbuckle, CEO and President, said the pile-up at the MGM Osaka site is expected to begin “by May or June” in 2025, with the project’s target date still “in the mid-2030s.”

Badminton Korea Association launches investigation into An Se-young controversy

The Badminton Korea Association has taken a proactive stance by launching an official investigation in response to allegations made by gold medalist Ahn Se-young.

The association, which had remained silent in the immediate aftermath of the Paris Olympic Games, announced on Thursday that a special fact-finding committee had been formed to look into the matter.

This committee, which will begin its work in closed-door sessions on Friday, comes amid increasing pressure from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

The fact-finding committee consists of five members, including two external lawyers, a university professor, and two internal representatives—Lee 추천 Sang-soon, the head of the association’s Human Rights Committee for athletes, and Park Gye-ok, the auditor of the association.

Their investigation will cover key aspects of the national team’s operations, such as injury management, international competition participation, training systems, and management regulations.

The committee’s goal is to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for the continued growth and success of badminton in Korea.

School rejects rights body’s recommendation to lift mobile phone ban

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea’s recommendation to lift a ban on student cellphone use during school hours has been rejected by a school, which saw the policy as a necessary measure to protect its students.

In a report released on Friday, the commission expressed regret over the decision made by the principal of a high school in an undisclosed location. It said the policy violates the spirit of the Constitution and United Nations treaties regarding the human rights of children.

“Restrictions on students’ right to using cellphones should be minimized under unavoidable circumstances to protect their safety or the rights of other people, as the right is intertwined with freedom of action and communication, which are enshrined in Articles 10 and 18 of the Constitution,” the commission said in the report.

Even if such restrictions are deemed necessary, the school should not confiscate the devices from students who don’t agree with the policy, it added.

This statement comes after many schools nationwide moved to adopt such policies in recent years as they aimed to manage the growing dependency children 스포츠 have on their phones.

In its statement submitted to the commission, the school said the policy was in place to preserve — not harm — the rights of its students.

“If students were allowed to use phones freely, they would be able to see harmful content online or play games, which would distract them from learning in class,” the school said.

The school also said the devices could even be used for unhealthy activities such as unlawfully making voyeur videos, as many such cases were reported in the past.

Moreover, given that students are permitted to use their phones in case of an emergency, it said characterizing the policy as a human rights violation would be an overstatement.

One-night stands in dramas: Inappropriate vs. freedom of expression

Recent K-dramas are using one-night stands as a theme, drawing criticism from some viewers. Captured from SBS

Recent dramas such as “Good Partner” and “My Sweet Mobster” have ignited controversy for their portrayal of one-night stands, with some viewers questioning whether these scenes are necessary, especially when they disrupt the established identity of the characters.

In “My Sweet Mobster,” for example, a character unexpectedly becomes pregnant after a one-night stand, leaving viewers puzzled.

Given that both shows are rated for viewers 15 and older, concerns have been raised about the potential for these portrayals to instill unhealthy sexual values.

Two popular dramas have recently addressed the topic of one-night stands in different ways. In episode 4 of SBS’s “Good Partner,” characters Han Yu-ri 한국을 (played by Nam Ji-hyun) and her lawyer colleague Jeon Eun-ho (played by Pyo Ji-hoon) end up spending a night together after a heavy drinking session.

The scene, however, failed to convince viewers, who found it inconsistent with Han Yuri’s character. Throughout the series, Han Yu-ri was portrayed as deeply affected by her father’s infidelity, leading her to be skeptical of marriage and relationships.

Her sudden decision to spend the night with Jeon Eun-ho, whom she previously viewed more as a friend than a romantic interest, felt out of character, leading to criticism from viewers.

Badminton star An Se-young to withdraw from August tournaments

Paris Olympic badminton champion An Se-young has decided to withdraw from all international tournaments scheduled for this month, citing knee and ankle injuries, amid a row with the national badminton association.

Yonhap News Agency learned through information gathered from various sources Tuesday that An Se-young had informed the Badminton Korea Association (BKA) of such a decision through her club team, Samsung Life Insurance, the previous day.

An, who recently clinched gold in women’s singles at the Paris Olympics, will skip the BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open (Aug. 20-25) and the Super 500 Korea Open (Aug. 27-Sept. 1). She was set to defend her titles at both events.

The 22-year-old cited knee and ankle injuries as 커뮤니티 the reason for her withdrawal.

She injured her right knee during the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games final and hurt her ankle tendon in the pre-Olympic training camp this year.

However, speculation is rife that An’s decision may be linked to her recent criticism of the BKA.

Soon after her Olympic victory on Aug. 5, An lashed out at her national team and the association for their poor handling of her knee injury, and for outdated and inefficient operations, among other things.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has launched an investigation into the association in response to An’s comments.

As of now, An is reportedly the only Olympic team member who has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming tournaments.

Korea Football Association in hot water due to An Se-young controversy, audit

The Korea Football Association (KFA) is under pressure as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism intensifies an audit fueled by the ongoing An Se-young incident and increasing criticism of the appointment process for national team head coach Hong Myung-bo.

Now, with the ministry’s audit of the Badminton Korea Association underway, it seems that the KFA’s audit will also accelerate.

As of Tuesday, the ministry has completed a preliminary audit of the KFA and initiated a full-scale audit the day before. A team of 12 auditors will spend the next two to three weeks thoroughly examining the KFA’s operations, including the selection process for the national team head coach and the transparency of budget expenditures.

Previously, on June 15, the ministry announced 토토 its intention to audit the KFA in response to controversies surrounding the procedural legitimacy of Hong Myung-bo’s appointment.

The initial investigation revealed issues, leading to a formal audit starting on July 18. This included on-site audits at the KFA’s office, culminating in the current full investigation.

It is highly unusual for the government to directly audit individual sports associations, indicating the seriousness with which it views this matter.

In particular, the ministry has signaled a broader reform initiative across various sports associations, using the revelations surrounding the badminton star An Se-young as a catalyst for restructuring sports policies and practices in the post-Olympic period.

Badminton star An Se-young urges for more flexibility in support practices

Olympic badminton champion An Se-young talks to journalist at the Incheon International Airport, Aug. 7. Yonhap

Olympic badminton champion An Se-young broke her long silence Friday, clarifying her recent criticism of the national badminton federation.

The 22-year-old gold medalist sparked controversy when she lashed out at her national team and the Badminton Korea Association (BKA) for their poor handling of her knee injury, and for outdated and inefficient operations, among other things, soon after winning the women’s singles event at the Paris Olympics on Aug. 5.

But she had not commented further on the situation.

“What I ultimately want to express is my hope for more flexibility in changing unreasonable but customary practices,” An wrote on her social media account.

An elaborated on her concerns regarding injury management, expressing disappointment with the support she received.

“I wanted flexible and efficient support tailored to each player’s specific situation and injury severity, as they all differ,” she said. “However, the reality I encountered was far from this, which greatly disappointed and saddened me. I deeply regret that there wasn’t someone who would listen to my concerns, rather than dismissing the issue with comments like ‘You’re not the only one’ or ‘You’re already receiving special treatment.'”

She injured her right knee during the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games final and hurt her ankle tendon in the pre-Olympic training camp this year.

The young athlete urged the BKA to take proactive action, saying, “I hope that the association officials, who now hold the key to change, will no longer turn a blind eye and take proactive action.

“I’m secretly hoping for a time to have an honest 스포츠 conversation about what I’ve experienced, rather than engaging in a blame game with the association.”

An’s initial comments sparked investigations by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.

She addressed these bodies, requesting they “listen carefully to the athletes’ voices and ensure smooth communication between the association and players.”

But she once again apologized to fellow Korean athletes for stealing the spotlight away from them with her recent criticism of the national badminton federation.

“I’ve learned that while I’ve been focused solely on training and competition, I still lack the wisdom to navigate life’s challenges,” An said.

“I sincerely apologize to all the Korean Olympic team members, officials and the public for any concerns I may have caused.”

Unification minister calls on N. Korea to accept Seoul’s offer for dialogue channel

Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho speaks during a press conference at Government Complex Seoul in Jongno District, Seoul, Aug. 16. Yonhap

Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho on Friday called on North Korea to respond to South Korea’s offer for an official dialogue platform and resume suspended inter-Korean communication channels.

Kim made the call a day after President Yoon Suk Yeol proposed to North Korea the establishment of a working-level dialogue channel that can “take up any issue” in an address marking Liberation Day.

Yoon unveiled a vision for freedom-based unification with North Korea and pledged to expand the inflow of outside information into the North.

“As the president proposed the establishment of a dialogue channel between the two Koreas, (I) am calling on North Korea to accept it,” Kim told a 한국을 press briefing.

The minister said South Korea is open to discussing any topics, including North Korea’s denuclearization, humanitarian issues and inter-Korean exchanges.

“To this end, the inter-Korean liaison communication line and the military hotlines that North Korea unilaterally suspended should be resumed,” he said.

Yoon’s unification vision came in an update to the government’s unification formula unveiled in 1994 that calls for the pursuit of reconciliation and cooperation, the creation of a Korean commonwealth and the completion of a unified country.

‘Draft Motivation’ Moon Jung-hyun, Yoo Ki-sang Show Potential to Grow as a Crossroads in Korean Basketball

Despite the defeat, Moon Jung-hyun and Yoo Ki-sang, who were born in 2001, showed performance that made them look forward to the future.

The South Korean men’s basketball team lost 80-88 in the second warm-up match against the Japanese national team at Ariake Arena in Tokyo on the 7th. 메이저놀이터

Yoo Ki-sang, who started side by side on the day, played 33 minutes and 1 second and scored 17 points, including 5 3-pointers, and Moon Jung-hyun played 20 minutes and 24 seconds, showing good performance with 8 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

The first thing that caught my eye was organic image. Yoo Ki-sang, who is joining the national team for the first time this time, displayed bold attempts to shoot from the outside starting from the first game, and displayed three-point shooting from the first quarter with more confidence in the second game.

As Yoo Ki-sang already showed his shooting ability in the first game, Japanese players also defended against Yoo Ki-sang under pressure, but Yoo Ki-sang’s confidence was more than that.

Yoo Ki-sang also showed good performance in defense. Despite the gap, Yoo tried to block Japanese players’ scores by showing strong physical struggle, not like a player wearing the Taegeuk mark for the first time, and after blocking the opponent’s big man’s shot attempt at the end of the third quarter, he passed an accurate pass to Lee to assist him in dunking.

In addition, his performance was enough to threaten Japan, so that whenever Yoo Ki-sang made a three-point shot, the Japanese reporters said, “Next Korean shooter.”

Moon also showed his potential to be competitive in the international arena, although he lacked skills. “I wish I could grow like Doncic,” coach Ahn Jun-ho, whom he met on Thursday after the first leg, said of Moon. “I wish I could grow like Doncic. If I were the coach of my team, I would give Moon the same role as Doncic. He is a very versatile player.”

As coach Ahn said, Moon Jung-hyun drove the ball directly to the offensive court and played a bridge role in the promised pattern play, helping the team’s attack to go smoothly.

Moon also made a bold breakthrough against Jacobs Akira, who is 9 centimeters taller than himself, when his opponent brought Ha to the outside. He even completed a three-point play, which was a bonus.

The current national team is so young that Byun Jun-hyung, who was born in 1996, is the youngest. However, the duo Yoo Ki-sang and Moon Jung-hyun, who were born in 2001, played a central role, recording one win and one loss.

Many said that Korea was inferior in its objective performance, but it will return to Korea on the 8th with many achievements thanks to the young players’ performance. Let’s look forward to Yoo Ki-sang and Moon Jung-hyun, who will grow further and become the future of the national team.
