Wrestling’s top heavyweight Kim Min-seok misses first round of national selection due to plantar fasciitis

Wrestling’s top heavyweight, Kim Min-seok (Suwon City Hall), missed the first round of the 2024 National Team Selection Tournament due to injury.Kim did not compete in the men’s Greco-Roman 130-kilogram event on Thursday at Taebaek Kogen Gymnasium in Gangwon Province.Kim submitted a medical certificate to the Korea Wrestling Federation stating that he will need to rest for four weeks due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot.Kim will have to win the second round of the tournament, scheduled for February next year, and then defeat first-round winner Lee Seung-chan (Gangwon Provincial Athletic Association) in the final.Kim is a two-time bronze medalist at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games and the first Asian athlete to win a bronze medal in the heavyweight category at the 2018 World Championships.

On the day, Gong Byeong-min (Sungshin Yanghoe) won the men’s 74kg freestyle and Chun Mi-ran (Samsung Life Insurance) won the women’s 50kg freestyle.Jeong Jung-jae (Suwon City Hall), the bronze medalist in the men’s Greco-Roman 60kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games, will move up a weight class and compete in the 67kg category on Friday.Korean wrestling icon Kim Hyun-woo (Samsung Life) will also compete in the retired 77kg Greco-Roman category on Friday.The finalists will be eligible to compete in the Asian Quarterfinals 슬롯게이밍 and World Quarterfinals for the right to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
