July 17 will mark the closing day of Mirage, ending an era in the history of New City. Mirage has confirmed that it will hold a farewell ceremony before it closes. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on July 17 and will include speeches by prominent figures in the gambling sector, including Hard Rock’s chairman and Seminole Gaming’s CEO, as well as Mirage’s boss, Joe Lupo.
Currently, some 1,700 workers at the casino resort are represented by the Culinary and Bartenders union. The union has played a key role in helping workers affected by the shutdown find new jobs in efforts such as job fairs, informational and training campaigns.
In a recent interview with The Las Vegas Sun, Ted Papizoggi, the director-general of the Culinary Association, said closing facilities like Mirazoo is difficult. One of those options is $2,000 in annual compensation and six months of medical insurance and pension for an employee to work at a hotel casino. If workers choose this option, they will not be automatically rehired by the property if it reopens about three years after the redevelopment.
On the other hand, Miraju’s employees may choose other options that offer less attractive compensation. The difference is that once the redevelopment is complete, employees can return to the building. The first option allows workers to apply, and the second option guarantees employment.
