‘Legendary’ Son Heung-min challenges history at the end of the PL…Only 5 candidates from the past → Player of the Month Award

Tottenham beat Bournemouth 3-1 in the 20th round of the Premier League (PL) held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, at 11 p.m. on Dec. 31 (Korea time). Having won this match, Tottenham, which ranked fourth, trailed Arsenal by one point.

The winner of this match was Son Heung-min. Perhaps due to tight schedule, Son lost a good chance to score from the start of the first half. He also displayed poor performance in the first half. Still, Son had the instinct to “one shot, one kill.”

After taking over from Giovanni Lo Celso’s pass in the 26th minute of the second half, Son scored with a beautiful left footed shot. It was the moment when Son scored his 12th goal in the league. With this goal, Son has now tied for second in the PL scoring rankings.

With this accomplishment, Son wrapped up his best performance in December. Having scored one goal and one assist in the first match against Manchester City in December, Son scored one goal and two assists in the match against Newcastle, one goal against Everton, one assist against Brighton, and one assist against Bournemouth, before adding one more goal. Son has four goals and four assists in seven matches that took place in December. 파친코

None of the PL players scored more offensive points than Son in December. It is expected that Son will be included in the nomination for Player of the Month award given by the PL Secretariat. If Son can challenge for the Player of the Month award once again, he could be close to a historic record. Son had already won the Player of the Month award this season for his best performance last September.

Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Mohamed Salah are the only players who have won the PL Player of the Month award more than five times in history since the 1994-95 season.

Son has won four awards so far, tying for seventh with the most wins. If Son wins the Player of the Month award in December, he can match Rooney, Van Persie, and Salah. If he wins the award, he will become the holder of the most player of the month award in PL along with Salah.

The likely contender seems to be Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke. Solanke led Bournemouth’s tremendous rise in December and scored seven goals. In terms of the number of goals scored, Solanke is overwhelmed, so it would be no wonder if he gets the award.
